Historical Notes

Our church was founded in 1718 and initially located in Whippany.  In 1755 a new church was erected in the present location in East Hanover.

Some interesting historical notes:

  • The building floor is sloped towards the front for a better view of the pulpit.
  • The foot benches, currently in pews, were built by the families that attended church, it kept their feet off the cold floor.
  • For warmth in church, members burned corncobs into coals and placed them into foot stoves.
  • Pews are totally enclosed under the seats for added warmth, except for one pew where there is a pass-thru between pews – it is presumed this was done for a family pet.

Historic Restoration

Both our building and the adjoining cemetery have suffered greatly over time from the deteriorating effects of weather and pollution. Faced with the necessity of repairing long-term damage and mindful of the parameters associated with landmark preservation, we are undertaking this much needed restoration with the hopes of raising the necessary funding. All funding collected will be utilized strictly for this restoration project. This building is a landmark of spirit.
